Michael Franti, Cloud Cult to play Bayfront July 9
A festival this summer will feature musician and social justice advocate Michael Franti & Spearhead as its headliner, in addition to local musicians, community yoga and speakers.
Twin Ports Bridge Festival is a multifaceted event being produced by Duluth-based Laughingstock Design with a theme of unity.
“It’s all related to community,” said Shane Bauer, owner of the graphic design company. “We’re all here. Progress won’t come until we realize we all come from the same place.”
The event is scheduled for July 9 at Bayfront Festival Park. Tickets are $29 and go on sale April 29 at laughingstockdesign.biz. Children younger than 10 can get in free with a special ticket.
Also on the bill: the band Cloud Cult, mental health speaker Pete Feigal, local musicians James Moors and Sarah Krueger, and motivational speaker Xavier Bell. There will be community yoga on the waterfront, outdoor activities — including a climbing wall — from Positive Entergy Outdoors, food and craft vendors and a showcase of local nonprofits.
“You can’t just put bands on a bill and expect people to come,” Bauer said. “People want to leave with something gained.”
Michael Franti & Spearhead is a hip hop, jazz, reggae, funk, folk rock band that has been together since the mid-1990s. They are known for their emphasis on social justice, peace and environmentalism. They released their seventh studio album, “The Sound of Sunshine” in September.
Cloud Cult is an experimental band known for environmentalism. The band with Duluth ties released its most recent album “Light Chasers” in 2010 and played at the College of St. Scholastica this past November.
Bauer said he isn’t sure if this festival will become a yearly event.

GET A CLOUD CULT PAINTING: Cloud Cult has two professional painters on stage for the band's live shows. The paintings are created live during the set and auctioned off at the end of the show. Now's your chance to get your own painting from one of these talented painters. For a modest amount, you can commission the painters to create a painting with your chosen theme. Check out the artists' websites (Connie Minowa and Scott West) for samples of their work and email us if you are interested in learning more.
