Unplug was recorded in front of a sold out audience at the Southern Theater in Minneapolis, MN in early December 2013. It was produced and mixed by Jeff D. Johnson who has been doing Cloud Cult’s live sound for the past seven years.
The album was mastered by Jeff Lipton (Bon Iver, Arcade Fire). While the songs were all pulled from the band’s existing discography, the versions on "Unplug" are new orchestrations of the album versions. A movie of the album and performance will be available later in 2014.
The intricate storyline of the album was written by Craig Minowa prior to the writing and recording of the music. Songs from this album have been published across the U.S., including National Public Radio investigative piece on 9/11.
The music is as cutting-edge hip as it is earth-minded. The album took 4 long years to create and is a concept album about a man's life, starting moments before conception and following through his struggles to find peace in a world overflowing with commercialism and environmental imbalance.
